Our Top 10 Romantic Movies

It’s February, the month of love, so it’s only appropriate to share my Top 10 romantic movies. I love watching movies of all genres, but romantic ones are by far my favourite. I’m a bit of an old romantic and for me you just can’t beat a love story. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a partner to watch these with, snuggle on the sofa with a bag of treats and a brew and enjoy the ‘will they, won’t they’ storylines of some fantastic movies.

Pretty Woman

At first glance the story line of this classic movie doesn’t scream romance, man pays prostitute to spend time with him, how can that ever be romantic? However the blossoming love story between Edward and Vivian is so captivating to watch, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere just have an amazing on screen chemistry, that it easy to see why it’s one of my favourite Romantic films.

50 First Dates

As a massive fan of The Wedding Singer (1998) I was so excited when another Barrymore and Sandler collaboration, 50 First Dates, was announced six years later. When playboy Henry played by Adam Sandler has a chance meeting with Lucy (Barrymore) he is unaware that she suffers from short-term memory loss and won’t remember him. What follows is the sweetest love story of persistence and dedication by Henry to prove to Lucy’s over protective family his intentions are good.

Beauty and the Beast

I’m a bit of a big kid when it comes to Disney films and the animated version of Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favourites. On the release weekend of the updated version of the movie I literally had to beg my teenage daughter to come with me to the cinema to see it and we weren’t disappointed. The story line needs little introduction as it’s ‘a story as old as time’. A real love story which shows that beauty and love is about much more than someones exterior appearance. A fabulous story line with a real feel good ending.

It Could Happen To You

This film has a double romantic meaning for me as when we were dating Mr F sent it to me in the post as I hadn’t seen it and he knew I would love it- he was right. The film sees police officer Charlie, played by Nicolas Cage, promise to share his lottery ticket with waitress Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) when he realises he doesn’t have the money to pay for his bill at the café where she works. Unbelievably his ticket scoops the jackpot and being the honest guy that he is Charlie ensures that he keeps his promise to share the money with Yvonne which doesn’t go down well with his wife! The movie follows Charlie and Yvonne’s blossoming friendship as they use their wealth to do good deeds within their community much to the horror of Charlie’s wife Muriel who wanted to keep all the money. As well as being a beautiful love story the selflessness shown makes it a real feel good movie that leaves you with that warm fuzzy feeling and huge grin.

You’ve Got Mail

Set back in the day of dial up internet You’ve Got Mail follows Kathleen Kelly a small independent bookshop owner who unwittingly befriends her business rival Joe Fox in an online chat room. Despite each having a partner their relationship continues to grow online before Joe discovers the truth about Kathleen’s identity. I adore this film, not just because of all the shots of fully stocked bookshops, but it leaves you hanging until the final scenes to see what will happen and even after thousands of watches it still gets me choked up – a sure-fire sign of a great movie!

Valentine’s Day

This film’s budget must have been huge as it’s jam-packed full of well known stars including Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Alba and Ashton Kutcher to name but a few! The film follows many different couples of all ages during Valentine’s with break-up’s and make-ups along the way.  It follows so many stories you have to be on your toes to keep up (or perhaps that’s just me?). I have read a lot of criticism about this film, but I thought it was really great watch and perfect for the February the month of LOVE!

PS I Love You

Again, the story line doesn’t make the most obvious romantic tale with the lead character’s husband passing away, but this is one of most beautiful love stories. The story follows Holly who has recently lost her husband and love of her life Gerry. Knowing of his imminent death Gerry leaves letters and surprises for his wife for the first year after he is gone, each one designed to help her move forward and on with her life without him. I love the portrayal in the film which shows you scenes from when Gerry was alive as well as occasionally showing him as a ‘ghost’. It’s a real heart-warming story of true love even after death. Sounds quite morbid, but I assure you it isn’t – although I can’t guarantee that you won’t shed any tears as it still gets me and I have watched it many times!

Fools Rush In

A chance meeting outside the toilet leads to a one-night stand for Isabel and Alex -played by Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek. With Isabel leaving before he wakes Alex carries on with his life until three months later a knock at the door changes his life. Despite knowing nothing about each other the pair decide to marry in Vegas and quickly realise how different their backgrounds and cultures are. This is one of my all time favourite movies and even though I could tell you more about the story line I won’t as I don’t want to spoil it if you haven’t seen it. What I will say though is it all comes down to fate, something I wholeheartedly believe in.

Notting Hill

Who hasn’t fantasised over falling in love with a movie star? William Thacker (Hugh Grant) can’t quite believe his luck when he literally bumps into movie star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) in the street managing to pour orange juice all over her in the process! Inviting her back to his house to clean up the pair share a brief kiss that begins their ‘will they, won’t they’ love story. The timing never seems to be right for poor William and Anna despite their obvious attraction. A fantastic romantic comedy with a happy – if not a bit predictable- ending.

So I Married an Axe Murderer

Those who have read my blog will know that Mike Myer’s films are one of my guilty pleasures so of course I had to include this one in my romantic favourites. Myers plays Charlie a commitment phobic poet who finds fault with every girl he dates. He starts dating Harriet, a local butcher, until a series of coincidences make him begin to think she isn’t quite what she seems, but is she really a killer? Like all Mike Myers films this one is filled with laugh out loud comedy moments, him playing his Scottish Dad is a real highlight! This film gives a fabulous twist on the usual romantic story!
