Review: Fifty Shades Freed

Cast your mind back to 2012 and the title Fifty Shades of Grey became the best-selling book ever in Britain. You couldn’t seem to go anywhere without seeing someone absorbed in the ‘erotic’ tale – public transport, coffee shops, workplaces, sunbathers, they all seemed to have their noses in the same book! It wasn’t a surprise then when movie makers decided to cash on the books success and make a trilogy of films based on the books by E L James.

Having jumped on the bandwagon myself and read the trilogy I was excited to see how the movies compared and was first in line- along with the millions of other fans! –  to see the first two films on the day of release and Fifty Shades Freed was no exception! As soon as the tickets were available I bagged some for me and my sister for our yearly lady date – not quite sure what we are going to do next year SOB!

Fifty Shades Darker finished with a newly engaged Christian and Ana celebrating with family whilst Jack Hyde, Ana’s ex-boss, sinisterly watched from across the lake. The highly anticipated final instalment, Fifty Shades Freed, picks up a few months later as they finally exchange vows. This is the moment fans of the series have all been waiting for and the luxurious wedding doesn’t disappoint and neither does the extravagant honeymoon that follows.

Unfortunately, their happiness is cut short when they must return home early from their honeymoon due to a breach of security and a fire at Grey Enterprises. With increased personal security Ana returns to work and finds herself having to adjust to her ‘new’ life as Mrs Grey. Although it’s not all smooth sailing for the couple who face some serious rocky patches along the path of newly wedded ‘bliss’.

Mia, Christian’s Sister, is kidnapped and held to ransom in this instalment and as a fan of the book I was rather disappointed with how it was portrayed in the film, feeling it could have been a bit more dramatic than it was. I must add though that Rita Ora really did a fantastic job in her portrayal of Mia.

As expected there are plenty of sexy scenes in the movie and it is obvious that Jamie Dornan who plays Christian has done his fair share of ‘working out’ since the last film, giving us ladies plenty to drool over! However, things are certainly toned down in comparison to the previous films with the Red Room only being featured on a couple of occasions, highlighting the shift in their relationship to more of a partnership – although don’t get too excited old habits die hard and Christian still likes to have the upper hand.

There are a few moments of comedy along the way, although I’m not sure if these were intentional or coincidental, but the audience at our screening had a good giggle either way! Ultimately, as I’m sure fans will know, this is the conclusion of their story culminating in a well-deserved Happy Ever After. The end of the film for me was perfect, reminding viewers of where Christian and Ana started and how far they have come. From Dominant and Submissive to loving couple the contrast is significant making you wonder if these are even the same characters who started the journey.

Although there were a few parts of the film that I feel could have been done better I really enjoyed the movie, even if I am a little sad that it has all come to an end! If you are a fan of the other films, then Fifty Shades Freed is a must. If you have yet to watch the other movies I would highly recommend seeing them beforehand as you  really need to understand the background storyline. If I was awarding stars, then it would have to be 4 out of 5.

  1. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a fan of both the books and the movies! I went to see it this weekend too and I really enjoyed it. If you take it as it is without expecting a revolutionary piece of cinematography then it’s a really entertaining film! I was a bit sad they missed out some of the plot links in the book and didn’t make more of Jack’s backstory though! xo

  2. I remember when these books first came out and I jumped on them so quickly like every other female in the UK, only to be disappointed in the way the author wrote – I just couldn’t get into it, her writing style wasn’t for me >.<
    But then came the first movie and I actually really enjoyed it, despite not having even finished the first book so I was pleasantly impressed!
    I've yet to watch the second movie as well as this one but will definitely get around to it as I can't leave this series without finding out how it ends. Thanks to your review, I'm quite excited to watch the final instalment so thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂

  5. I haven’t read the books myself , so I always like to know if the films have done it justice!
    I’ve seen the last two films so obviously I’m going to have to see the final one!! X

  9. 😱😱😱😱 OMG! I’m totes jelly Mel! I really really have to see this. The first two movies were pretty good to me and the like you have to see them when they come out right away. Here where in Barbados, it’s coming out in VDay itself 😑 which I was hoping it not to. I’m pretty bummed it’s ending too. Can’t wait to see it so I can come chat to you all about it 😂❤️

  10. I have to confess I haven’t read any of the books or seen the first two films. I did try the first book but I found the writing style so annoying I couldn’t keep reading 😦 So because of that I haven’t been keen on seeing the films either. Our tastes are governed by whatever Flora wants to see in the cinema these days – Star Wars was the last one, haha! Great review though, I enjoyed reading your thoughts and hearing about the – possibly – unintentional funny bits! x

  14. I haven’t read the books nor seen any of the movies…but your review is so engaging, I’m somewhat tempted to now! Also, I was SHOCKED by you first sentence – the best-selling book ever in Britain?? It beat out Harry Potter!? :O
