Messy Moments: It’s Slime Time!

Imagine if you will a wet rainy January day in Cumbria – for locals that’s not going to be difficult! One such day with a bored four-year-old on our hands we decided to have a go at making some DIY slime, having heard for months how popular this sensory activity was. There are many different methods out there for making slime, so we thought we would share how we made ours.

You will need:

Mixing Bowl

Spoon

Washable PVA Glue – we used approx. 250ml

Food colouring – any colour you fancy, we went for blue!

Shaving Foam – We used an adult size handful!

½ tea spoon of Bicarbonate of Soda

2 table spoons of Contact Lens Solution (must contain boric acid)

Baby Oil

How we made our slime:

1. Pour approx. 250ml PVA glue into a mixing bowl and add a few drops of your chosen food colouring then mix together.
2. Once well mixed, add the shaving foam (approx. adult sized handful) and mix together.
3. Add the Bicarbonate of Soda and Contact Lens Solution and mix together. As the mixture becomes firmer knead together until the right consistency is achieved.
4. Add a small squirt of baby oil to the mixture as this prevents the slime from being too sticky.
5. Have fun with your slime!!!!!!

It didn’t take us long to make our slime – even with the food colouring flood! Despite being hesitant about the feel of the slime at first Leo soon decided it was great fun, spending ages stretching and splatting it. Best of all from a parent’s point of view is that it’s completely washable, ideal as his jumper was an early casualty hence the vest, and it is easily unstuck from the table, arms, hands and everything else it came into contact with.

Ideal for keeping bored kids entertained on wet days, holidays in fact any day! Plus, if stored in an airtight tub your slime will last for ages providing many more hours of fun!
