FIVE LIVES
TWO DECADES APART
ONE CRIME
Road Trips, house parties, Tequila Tuesday’s, dreams for their futures; a fun, loveable force to be reckoned with. No-one but each other.
Sirens, blood, tears police tape, a crime scene. Broken hearts and a broken bond. Sad goodbyes and words they thought they’d never say. One by one, until there was nothing left…
When Karen, Jason, Jessica, Bradley and Veronica find themselves back together after twenty years apart, some are more keen than others to fix their broken bond but as secrets and lies are revealed about their University days and life since they split, the group are left in pieces. Can they fix their damaged friendship or was the reunion part the beginning of the end?
Friends since primary school five friends head off to University together only to be torn apart as the result of one life changing event, the murder of a popular lecturer. We follow them as they reconnect at their University reunion, however after twenty years their lives have changed – did they even know each other as well as they thought they did?
Filled with lies, betrayal and secrets from the past this novel makes the perfect thriller. Malone perfectly builds the characters and their relationships throughout by alternating between the present and past allowing us a real insight into their lives that I often find lacking in other books.
The prologue and first few chapters of this book really draw you in, giving snippets of information and insight into the story line which leave you intrigued and wanting more. The book for me was a real page turner, each chapter conclusion is written to perfection to leave the reader hanging. I finished it in one day as I couldn’t put it down it was so gripping and I haven’t done that with a book in ages! Malones writing style makes for a fabulous easy read, but without compromising on the detail and substance the story line needs.
This is Kirstie Malone’s debut novel and she dedicates it to her Mum and Dad stating, “All I want to do is make you proud”. Well Kirstie you have no worries, I’m sure your parents couldn’t be prouder! This is an amazing debut novel which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I look forward to reading further publications from her in the future.

This book sounds very intriguing! When past/present is dealt with in a good way (not confusing or tedious) it can be such a great storytelling device. I’ll be sure to check this one out!

This sounds a little like a much more accessible version of The Secret History (Donna Tartt)- the fact that you read it in a day is hugely encouraging! I will put this on my Amazon wishlist for when we go on holiday later this year and let you know what I think – great review, Mel, thank you for sharing! x
