Book Review: Some Kind of Wonderful by Giovanna Fletcher

If you read my blog you may have seen in my Christmas Gifts post that I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Giovanna Fletcher’s new book Some Kind ofWonderful from my Sister -she knows me so well! As a massive fan of McFly and with Tom being my favourite, it is only logical for me to become a fan of his incredibly talented wife too. I have read all her books to date and couldn’t wait to get my teeth stuck into this one.

Some Kind of Wonderful is the story of Lizzy, in a long-term relationship with Ian she is sure that he is about to pop the question during their trip to Dubai. However instead of gaining a ring on her finger she spends the flight home sitting alone and finds herself back living in her childhood home. Having spent the last ten years in a relationship Lizzy has no idea who she is and attempts to rediscover who she was all those years ago Pre-Ian.

I found this book very different to Gi’s other’s, it was more of an easy read I could pick up and put down as opposed to a page-turner like Billy and Me. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, it was fantastic as an easy read, it didn’t require too much concentration on the plot and was just what I needed after the hustle and bustle of Christmas.

Whilst a little predictable at times it is a fantastic feel good story about finding yourself after lost love. We see Lizzy’s attempt to search for her eighteen-year-old self, knowing that attempting to reignite her life from 10yrs ago will be futile, yet still cheering her on in the hope that she finds what she is looking for. The moral of the story being it’s inevitable that people in our lives will shape who we become, and we may never know what we would have been like without their influence – just embrace it!

One thing I was slightly disappointed with was the lack of romance. which has been a common theme throughout her other novels. The story however is filled with the wonderful strong relationships she has with her family and friends which are beautifully portrayed. There are a few nods in the book to Giovanna’s own life, including a mention of Coppafeel the charity she works alongside to raise awareness of checking your breasts regularly – a great way to spread the word in my opinion!

Whilst I don’t think this is Gi’s best book to date it’s certainly not to be dismissed. A nice easy read with a great message of self-discovery that may make you view your own life from a different perspective.

The hardback copy Some Kind of Wonderful can be purchased from Amazon for only £6.49 (RRP £12.99)

  1. I love this review! I fell in love with this book. I was actually lucky enough to go to a Q&A with Gi and got my copy signed. I have also read her other books since and I love them all so much. I feel like I just fall in love with all her characters, I love the fact it doesn’t just focus solely on the romantic elements.

    1. This would be perfect as a holiday read , would recommend the kindle edition though as it’s quite big and heavy in hardback and I don’t think paperback has been released yet!

  3. I absolutely love all of Gi’s books and I’m a McFly fan like you! I haven’t actually got this one yet but I look forward to reading it although it is disappointing there isn’t much romance I think she writes her romance novels so well!

    1. I agree she does romance so well, this is a great read though I think perhaps I just expected it to be similar to her previous books! Different is good though and I hope you enjoy it if you read it 😃

  4. I love how honest your reviews are. I don’t like predictability but sometimes it’s not even the author’s fault when you’ve read so many books tehe. Gi is a lovely author so I do believe you when you say to still give it a read. I like romance but I don’t always care for it so that wouldn’t be a prob for me once it’s fun. ❤️

  5. I’ve not read anything by Giovanna Fletcher before but it sounds really cute and sometimes having an easy read is just what you need when you’re a busy mum!
With some great themes, it’s interesting that she removed the romance side of things and focused on the main character finding herself again, what a refreshing change.
I’ll definitely be checking this out so thank you for the refreshing review hun 🙂

  6. Great review. I might give this one a go, even though I wasn’t keen on the one Giovann book I tried (so much so, I didn’t finish it). This one sounds interesting so I’ll keep a look out for it x

    1. Thank you lovely 😃 I believe they have a YA collaboration series of books coming out which sound fantastic! Tom’s kids books are amazing and Gi does ‘chick lit’ stuff really well. Let me know what you think if you decide to give any a go
