Like many I grew up watching and enjoying Disney movies and a few months ago I uncovered my (huge) collection of Videos from when I was young. Despite no longer having a video player on which to watch them am loathe to part with them as they evoke so many happy memories from my childhood. Of course, as soon as they were old enough I have shared my love of Disney with my kids and I hope they will pass the enjoyment down to future generations too. Now digitally remastered and looking fabulous when watched on quality high tech devices like the 4k HDR TV Panasonic* they truly are timeless in all senses of the word.
Having uncovered my treasure trove of movies it got me thinking about my favourite Disney movies, especially as some that I have on VHS I haven’t watched for well over twenty years – showing my age a bit there! There are certainly plenty that have been well-watched with the children, but they do seem to favour the more modern films that they have grown up with. I’ve been thinking for ages about writing this post and after much consideration I have chosen my Top 5 Disney films to share with you. Robin Hood was without a doubt my most watched Disney film when I was younger, yet it’s one I haven’t seen for many years. I don’t really hear it discussed every often either which is such a shame as it’s an amazing watch. Released in 1973 the film tells the classic tale of Robin Hood using a menagerie of animals as characters, my favourite is Prince John he is so funny! I’m adding the DVD to my Christmas list as I’d really like to relive my childhood and watch it with the kids as it’s one of the few they haven’t seen. I’m obviously not alone in my love of this old school classic as it is rated as 7.6 on IMDB which is a great score as I find reviewers are often harsh with their ratings.
Wreck It Ralph is another Disney film that in my opinion doesn’t get enough credit for how amazing it is. Before I originally watched it I was somewhat dubious that it would be something I would enjoy, and I couldn’t have been more wrong, it’s simply amazing. I think the story line is fabulously original and I simply can’t wait for the forthcoming release of Ralph Breaks the Internet, I’m hoping it will be equally as entertaining, if not more so if the trailers are anything to go by. My favourite character is of course Vanellope, although very closely followed by Ralph!
This is another favourite from my youth, a real classic fairy-tale! I know there has been some controversy recently about the messages portrayed in some of the older Disney films, but we must remember they were made in a different era. I particularly loved Sleeping Beauty as a young girl and spent many an afternoon dancing around the living room in my Mum’s heels to ‘Once Upon A Dream’ dreaming of my Prince Charming and it’s not done me any harm. It’s another on my list for a re-watch and even though it’s been a good while fear not I can still remember the lyrics!
If you are a lover of Disney films this is one that will surely appear on your favourites list! What’s not to love? Plenty of catchy songs, humour and of course a happy ending, even if it is slightly tinged with sadness for Baloo and Bagheera. This is one of the first Disney films I shared with my youngest and it’s one he comes back to a lot, as well as spending plenty of time singing along to the soundtrack on Apple Music! Being over 50 years old Jungle Book is testament to the fact that Disney films are timeless and is a real must-watch for everyone.
The Little Mermaid had me enraptured as a kid, despite the scary scenes with Ursula! All three of my kids love this film and I regularly watch it at Leo’s request – believe me I don’t need to be asked twice! This was probably my second favourite film as a child, I loved the magic and romance of the film and even as an adult I still find it holds the same appeal. The film was released when I was eight and I remember going to the cinema to see it when it immediately took it’s place on my favourites list where is remains many years later.
