It’s January, a brand new year, a fresh page and we are all feeling empowered and like we can achieve anything! I’ve wanted to change up my blogging schedule and make a few changes for a while and the New Year felt like the perfect time to do just that. The first new feature is going to be a weekly interview series ‘Meet The Blogger’, designed to share some of the wonderful blogs out there and the fabulous people behind them. I personally love discovering new blogs to read and I hope this series will help you all uncover some newly found gems.
First up we have the wonderful Sarah from Dream Of Home who blogs about interior design, weddings, lifestyle and much more! I hope you enjoy finding out more about her!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your blog
I started my blog, Dream of Home, in April 2017, just 4 months after we bought our first home. We had to undergo a big renovation, and that was where the blog started. I wanted to track and share our renovation, partly for myself to look back on, but also for other people to read too.
We got married the year after we bought and renovated our house, which is why there is a small wedding section on there too for brides-to-be, full of tips, budget ideas and advice. It’s been a busy two years for us!
How long have you been blogging?
I wrote my first post on 27th April 2017, so a year and a half now.
What or who inspired you to create your blog?
I graduated from university in July 2016 with a degree in English Literature. I got my first job in digital marketing the following April, having done some work experience at a publishing house and a digital magazine. Part of my job is to work with bloggers, and most members of my team have a blog, so this is what inspired me to start my own.
I had actually started a blog before this, a book review blog, but it hadn’t gone anywhere. This time, I went self-hosted and wanted to stick it out. And that’s how it began.
What’s your favourite thing about running your blog?
I think I enjoy all the behind the scenes stuff most. I am really interested in SEO and marketing (obviously, because I work at a digital marketing agency), so I love this aspect of my blog. I get most of my page views from Google, so I’m obviously doing something right!
How do you stay motivated?
Whatever I feel like writing at the time works best for me. I do struggle sometimes, but I don’t make myself stick to a schedule. I couldn’t put so much pressure on myself. I know some bloggers post every Tuesday and Friday, or once on a weekend. But I prefer to write what I want, when I want.
I also keep motivated by looking at other bloggers’ websites and Instagram accounts to get inspiration. We have to stick together!
What’s been the most challenging part of your blogging journey to date?
I sometimes look at these incredible homes on Instagram and blogs, and think, Why doesn’t my house look like that? Being a first time buyer, there’s still lots we need to buy, like door handles, shelving, new wardrobes. Our money goes into things that don’t make your house look nicer (like a new boiler). I need to keep reminding myself that some of these bloggers are on their second/third homes, and gorgeous décor is just something you build up over time.
Tell us about your favourite blog post (feel free to add a link!)
It’s probably this one about hair loss due to my wedding. It was a tough post to write (and even harder to publish), but I think more brides need to stop seeing wedding planning as prancing around finding your dream dress and trying cake and wine, and understand that it really can have an effect on your body. I don’t want to put a downer on wedding planning; it can be amazing! But I just wanted to share that it’s not always easy.
Describe your blog in four words
Ooh, tough question. Inspiration, helpful, relatable, and homey.
What are your future hopes and dreams for your blog?
I’m very happy with how my blog is padding along at the moment. In the future, I’d quite like more engagement. I’m always commenting on other blogs and bloggers’ social media accounts, but my posts don’t get many comments, and engagement on my social media can be small. This is something I’m always trying to work on, so we’ll see how my efforts go.
