New Family Film Releases – Winter 2018

Movies are like buses, you wait for one to come along and instead loads arrive at once. It’s always the same either a famine or a feast, there seems to be no in-between! That’s certainly the case for the next couple of months for Family film releases, I’m truly spoilt for choice and there will be frequent cinema visits on the cards for the Fraser’s that’s for sure.

As a family we all really enjoy watching films, for me personally I think it’s possibly one of my favourite activities. Not much can beat putting a DVD on, snuggling up and chomping on some sugar laden treats and likewise we all enjoy a trip to the cinema when a film really takes our fancy. In the next two months there are so many films due for release that I NEED to see at the cinema, so I thought I’d take the opportunity in today’s post to tell you about four family films I can’t wait to see.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Disney have been making some amazing films recently and I’m sure this live-action. fantasy adventure which re-tells the story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King will be no different. With an all-star cast which includes Morgan Freeman, Kiera Knightly and Helen Mirren to name but a few it has hit written all over it.

The film tells the story of Clara who goes in search of a special key that will unlock a box containing a priceless gift from her late Mother. However, she instead finds herself in a strange, mysterious parallel world where she must make her way through the Fourth Realm, home of tyrant Mother Ginger in order to retrieve the key before hopefully returning home.

The trailer for this film is fabulous and looks action packed, with plenty of on the edge of your seat drama – the perfect combo. The budget and special effects as always with Disney films has obviously had no expense spared either. Being set at Christmas time this is going to make a superb festive watch and I can’t wait.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is due for UK release on 2nd November 2018.

The Grinch

Written by American children’s author Dr Seuss, The Grinch is a story I’m sure most of you will be familiar with and I can’t wait to see this brand-new animated version of this favourite Christmas tale. If you are unfamiliar with the story let me fill you in….. The Grinch has a somewhat unhealthy dislike of Christmas and despite spending most of the year isolated on his mountain decides to spoil the fun of the local in Whoville by stealing Christmas. Fear not though, despite sounding all doom and gloom this tale has a happy ending with the true meaning of Christmas shining through!

I’m a massive fan of Jim Carrey’s depiction of The Grinch in the 2000 film How The Grinch Stole Christmas and I’m excited to watch this new animated version which will hopefully a little less ‘scary’ for Leo! This film will be perfect to help the whole family get into the Christmas spirit. If you haven’t already check out the trailer it looks super funny!

The Grinch is due for UK release on 9th November 2018

Ralph Breaks The Internet

When I heard that Wreck-It-Ralph was getting a sequel I got so excited I very nearly peed a little! I LOVE the original movie, for me it’s one of the most under-rated Disney animations and deserves a much bigger accolade. This new adventure see’s friends Ralph and Vanellope discover a wi-fi router in their arcade and they embark on a mission inside the internet to help save the Sugar Rush game.

Excitingly this film sees cameo appearances from other Disney and Pixar animation characters including the Disney Princesses, The Muppets and Mickey. If possible, this movie looks even better than the original and I truly hope it live up to my expectations. Disney have really been making some belters lately, so I have everything crossed that I can add Ralph Breaks The Internet to the list.

Ralph Breaks The Internet is due for UK release on 30th November

Mary Poppin’s Returns

Oh my goodness, can you believe it a sequel to Mary Poppins 54yrs after the original! I must admit when I first heard about this film I wasn’t completely sold, when something isn’t broken why try and replicate it? However, the more I have seen about the film I’m intrigued to see how it plays out. I wholeheartedly approve of the decision to have Emily Blunt play Mary, she is perfect and I’m hoping her performance proves me right.

This new movie see’s Mary Poppins re-visit London and a grown-up Michael who now has a family of his own. Michael has suffered a personal loss and it’s this that prompts a visit from the wonderful Poppin’s to help him and his sister Jane re-discover the joy of their childhood. The premise sounds like the recipe for the perfect feel-good, magical family film.

Having grown up dancing and singing along to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious for me Mary Poppins has become a classic film and one you can hand on heart say, “they don’t make them like that anymore”, but I hope Disney have pulled this one out of the bag. I’m excited to share this film with the kids and see what they make of it as like me they have also grown up watching the original.

With the release date for Mary Poppins Returns in the UK set to be 19th December 2018 this will be one to go and see over the Christmas holidays.

Will you be going to see any of the films on my must-watch list? Which new film releases are you excited to see?

  1. You’re so right about them being like buses! We haven’t been to the cinema for a while, but I really want to see two of these films and my son’s also a big Grinch fan so it looks like we’ll be going three times soon!

  2. I’ll obviously be going to see all three of the new Disney films you’ve listed and I’m so excited for all of them but especially Ralph as the first one is one of my favourite Disney films ever!
