5 Reasons You Should Declutter Your Home

For me this time of year always brings with it a compulsion to declutter each and every room in the house. I’m not sure what it is? Perhaps the fact that the kids have been hanging around the house making more mess than usual all Summer or because I know there are Birthday’s and Christmas just around the corner meaning even more items that will need to find somewhere in the house to reside.

I do consciously try not to buy or keep unnecessary items, but with five of us packed into quite a small living space it’s often hard to prevent areas from becoming cluttered. There are so many reasons why having a regular declutter is worthwhile and once the purge is over I realise just how great it feels. Here are my 5 reasons everyone should declutter their home regularly.

Easier Cleaning

It sounds obvious, but once you have discarded items that were broken, unwanted or unnecessary you will find you have lots more room to reorganise your remaining belongings. Ultimately with less ’things’ it’s going to make it much easier to clean your home and maintain that level of cleanliness long term. Your cleaning time will be shorter and just think of all the things you could be doing instead – a nice relax in a hot bubble bath is top of my list!

Cluttered House, Cluttered Brain

When my home environment is cluttered I find my mental health suffers, and my anxiety goes into overdrive, it’s almost impossible to relax and I often finding myself becoming uncharacteristically snappy. Sorting through your belongings and discarding material items that have been cluttering your home will help you clear and declutter your mind along the way too. By clearing space in your home, it will feel like a lighter, more relaxing and happier environment in which to spend your time.

Finding Surprises

There are ALWAYS surprises to unearth when you are decluttering! The shirt at the back of the wardrobe that still has its label, your favourite lipstick you thought had been lost forever or even a photograph that you haven’t seen in ages. What better reason to sort through your clutter could there be plus who knows perhaps you will find some hidden cash too, ideal for treating yourself to a bottle of wine or a huge bar of chocolate to celebrate when all the hard work is done!

Make Money

During the decluttering process there are decisions to be made about which items to keep and which to let go, but what about those items you no longer want or need? There will of course be items that are of no use to anyone and are destined to end up in the bin, but many of the other items could make you some cash, perhaps to help towards a spot of redecoration in your new clutter free home!

Why not sell items still in good condition? Items like clothes, books and bric-a-brac can be listed on EBay or why not avoid paying fees and use your local Facebook selling pages instead. Just like Ebay you can sell almost anything with the bonus being the buyer usually collects from your home saving you the hassle of a trip to the Post Office. Not everything has to be in perfect condition either, you can sell broken ipad, phones, tablets and other gadgets to be recycled or refurbished and it’s amazing just how much money you can earn for items that are otherwise useless. So, start going through those drawers and cupboards immediately you could be sitting on a goldmine!

New Living Space

Once you have decluttered, reorganised and cleaned your home you’ll find your living space will feel like it did when you first moved in! You will know exactly what you have and where to find it, which will also save you heaps of  wasted time looking in endless cupboards to locate what you need. All your hard work means you have a fabulous new space and all that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy the luxury of knowing your house is clutter free.
