It’s that time of the year again when those festive CD’s can be extracted from the back of the cupboard and dusted off for their yearly outing – although personally Christmas music starts in the car for me around August usually!
There have been some questionable offerings of ‘Christmas’ music over the last twenty years with Christmas number one’s from an endless string of X Factor winner’s, Bob The Builder and of course who can forget Mr Blobby! None of these ‘novelty’ type songs really cut it for me- they just don’t make real memorable Christmas songs with any longevity anymore which is a real shame.
For me there are certain songs that even on hearing the first bar of music just give you that Christmassy feeling and evoke memories of years gone by. Showing my age here, but there are songs that used to be played endlessly on a loop in Woolworths, which as an 80’s child was THE place to go for all your Christmas shopping needs. Just hearing one of those songs now as an adult transports me back and I can remember standing in awe of the highly stacked shelves’ full of Christmas goodies.
We play a lot of music in our house all year round, but even more so during December. We have a tradition of having the Christmas music channels blaring whilst we erect the tree and also on Christmas morning when we are opening gifts and there is always a Christmas musical soundtrack to help the food preparation breeze past as opposed it feeling like the chore it actually is!
I have therefore decided to – with great difficulty – chose my ultimate Christmas playlist to share with you all:
- It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – Michael Bublè
- All I want for Christmas – Mariah Carey
- Last Christmas – Wham
- Merry Christmas Everybody – Slade
- Driving home for Christmas – Chris Rea
- Mistletoe and Wine – Cliff Richard
- Fairytale of New York – The Pogues
- I wish it could be Christmas – Wizzard
- Step into Christmas – Elton John
- Rocking around the Christmas tree – Brenda Lee
- Merry Christmas everyone – Shakin’ Stevens
- Wonderful Christmastime – Paul McCartney
- Have yourself a Merry little Christmas – Frank Sinatra
- Let it snow – Dean Martin

What is with Bob the Builder being considered a Christmas song??!! For me, it’s not Christmas without a little bit of Boney M 😂

If it’s around at Christmas time I think it’s all fair game to be considered as ‘Christmas ‘ music 😂.
